spring has started

yesterday was the first day of spring.  i spent the rainy afternoon celebrating inside, which was difficult at first, but once i got on a roll...

above is our "springly" decorated living room fireplace.  i put away the bucket of kindling, the fire screen, and the folded blanket.  out came a homemade spring wreath, candles, and other simple touches.

although i usually decorate with real flowers, i've experimented with real foliage wreaths before and i'm never lucky.  due to a lack of water, the plants die quickly and when the leaves dry they fall out and leave a mess.  i dried out some eucalyptus beforehand for this wreath and did find some mossy sticks in the woods.  all other foliage is fake.  i can smell the eucalyptus as soon as i walk in the room and it is heavenly!

early each spring i trim some branches off a few flowering trees or bushes.  above are branches off my forsythia.  the idea is to "force bud" them.  by putting them in a vase of warm water and changing it every couple days, the branches will flower into a gorgeous arrangement weeks before they flower outside.  this way i enjoy the bright yellow color twice as long.

the last small detail i added was brightly decorated match boxes to light the candles.  i always look forward to the first 65 degree night in the spring when the windows are freshly open and the sun sets late.  i will light the candles in the fireplace and enjoy a glass of white wine (another spring delight!).

happy spring!
