relax :: central illinois photography

how does this picture make you feel?  do you think the laundry is complete?  or do you think it's in a tall pile somewhere waiting to be washed and hung to try?

either way, for some reason, this makes me feel relaxed.  like... sitting-in-a-lawn-chair, drinking-a-beer, gazing-off-into-the-country kind of relaxed.

happy weekend friends!  i hope you find time to relax...

ransom box :: kid project :: personal story

i don't enjoy repeating myself.   i have a father who is hard of hearing and a mother who always starts paying attention mid-story (and wants me to catch her up).  my loving parents have been like this most of my life and that's enough for me... so when it comes to telling my 5-year-old "monster" to clean his room, i try to only say it once.

how's that?  only tell a child to pick up his toys once?  yep.  and if he ignores me, my home gets cleaned!  here's how:

  1. i have created a ransom box.  buy any clear storage container.  it's best to be clear so your child will be able to see the toys he/she is missing so dearly.
  2. write down a list of realistic and age appropriate chores.  group them or just write one per piece of paper and attach to ransom box.
  3. when your child wants his/her toys back, they must choose a piece of paper and do the chore that is written on it.
since implementing this little game, i have had my windows and mirrors cleaned, plants watered and bed made!  and the truth is, "the monster" actually enjoys doing the chores, so everyone is happy.  and he is learning...  not only learning about consequences, but also learning exactly how to clean a mirror and how to make a bed nicely.

now, i am going to be honest...  he still struggles with listening and following thru the FIRST time.  especially when the tv is on.  and i need to find a trick to make him do other things like put on shoes, brush teeth, etc. the first time.  but we're on our way to a better, less repetitive place.  at least when it comes to picking up toys.

xoxo.

what to wear... summer yard sales

printed pillows :: diy

for these printed pillows, as i will call them, i began with general print-making techniques.  instead of painting directly on the fabric, i first created the design onto a surface, then transferred (i.e. printed) it onto fabric.   why, o why would i do this?  because of the lovely and worn texture that is given to the design during the printing process.  and because it's fun!

here's the diy:

  1. lie out wax paper onto a flat surface
  2. using fabric paint, create your design directly onto the wax paper.
  3. place fabric face down on the painted design
  4. using a rolling pin or simply your hands, press and smooth the fabric
  5. peel away fabric from the wax paper
  6. let dry
i used my fabric for pillow cases.  i think even framing some frayed fabric would be amazing too.  the possibilities are endless.

adventure awaits :: inspiration

i've started collecting globes.  with rising sea levels and social unrest in parts of the world, our earth is changing rapidly.  our globe differs today from yesterday and tomorrow.  it is fun to document these changes, even though most small, with my collection.  and honestly, i find most of them at garage sales!

the one above still displays the soviet union.  it was fun comparing this globe with my son's more modern globe and explaining where russia came from!  i have seen where people paint globes or re-purpose them for lights, vases and other fun things.  i just couldn't bring myself to do it though.  i settled on a banner stuck on with double-sided tape.

i'm sure you've heard that this weekend we celebrate earth day...  my family and i are traveling to a cabin in the woods to fish and play games.  what will you do?  do you have plans to be outdoors?  are you attending any 'green' activities?

little boy feet :: photography

little baby boy feet are my weakness... so pudgy and soft.  i will remind myself of this when he's stinking up the house with them someday.

more uses for socks :: diy

and you thought socks were just for your feet...

  1. sew onto the ends of your sweater (my personal fave)
  2. cover a leftover sauce jar and use as a vase
  3. coffee sleeve
o, and by "sew" in number one above, i mean "iron on using heat & bond".

i also have one more idea, but no time to execute it.  maybe soon, stay tuned.

sock octopus :: diy :: kid project

you've heard of the famous 'sock monkey', but have you ever heard of the adorable 'sock octopus'?  i initially made this with babies in mind because they love to chew and pull on extremities, but surprisingly, 'the monster' is the one who went crazy for this little guy!  he now sleeps with it each night...  which i find a funny.

the how to:

  1. collect tall socks, scissors, clear circle bands (i used goody hair things), stuffing, & felt.
  2. depending on how tall your sock is, cut to the length you want your octopus
  3. stuff the toe-end of the sock and then secure with circle band
  4. cut eight little legs and pull them tight (this curls the fabric)
  5. cut circles out of felt and glue on as eyes
  6. share with your favorite kiddo
p.s.  wondering what i did with the leftover fabric from the socks?  you'll find out soon! xoxo.
