art over art :: diy

i've wanted to try painting over an old piece of artwork for a while, but have never found just the right piece. until yesterday! i had spontaneously stopped by goodwill to pick up a few things and came upon his pretty little lady. what do you think?!

i have to admit i was a little nervous. i actually liked her as is, so i was a bit afraid i'd ruin her. i think she turned out pretty cute in the end though!

this is a fun idea for adding some interesting pieces to your walls. if you do try it however, make sure you do a little research on the original artwork first. it would be a shame to paint over something well known & worth a bit. xo

easy wall decor :: diy :: painting inspiration

today, i thought i'd share some painting inspiration.   the wonderful thing about abstract art is that anyone can create it.  all you need is a canvas, brushes and your favorite colors in paint...

  1. first, brush the colors onto the canvas.  blend if you'd like.
  2. using painters tape, create a pattern or design
  3. i choose to paint over everything with white.  use any color you'd like though!
  4. when i peeled up the tape, the edges weren't very sharp.  this always happens to me.  i'm doing something wrong... just not sure what.
  5. anyway, i covered the messy edges with gold paint and then incorporated gold accents to finish the piece.
fun right?!  nothing better than easy art.  xoxo

nail & twine sign :: diy

i'm not sure why i love this sign so much... maybe because it's so simple.  or because the pink twine looks great with the rustic board and nails.  or maybe because i love font as art.  either way, i was going to put it in the shop, but i'm thinking of hanging it above our couch instead.

frame your flowers :: diy

here's a unique and easy way to display a bouquet of flowers.   i used spray paint on frames from the restore, but a fancy new frame would give this a modern twist.  these would make a darling decoration for a bridal shower or vintage wedding, don't you think?

wood circle :: wall decor :: diy

i've been thinking about the white space above our tv for a long time.  it's huge.  and blank.  and awkward.  i have tossed around a lot of ideas.  A LOT.  but, i eventually decided on wood slices.  i'm certain that most guests think i'm a bit nutso, but i just adore this little art installation.  it's very modern and rustic at the same time, which is exactly my thing these days.

o, and i comforted my concerned husband with the idea that i would hang each with a command strip so that no damage would be done to the precious, white, blank, boring wall.  that did not work.  repeat: that did not work.  heavy wood discs were falling all over the place.  one day, i came home and there was a single fallen slice sitting in the dogs bed.  she had moved to my bed.  i ended up drilling holes in the back of each disc and then nailing holes in the walls.  lots of holes.  o well.

it's worth it, don't you think?

washi tape art :: mixed media

wine cork art board :: diy :: wall decor

so, i know i'm not inspiring any new ideas here.   but isn't my new corkboard fun? i started this project with an entirely different plan.  it wasn't really going to be a corkboard... i was going to make something abstract, and paint some of the ends of the cork.   but, once i started gluing, i started loving the wine-stained red tips and didn't want to paint anything.  i like how they are all different shades of merlot.  can you tell i favor red wine?

o, and a little secret.  each cork has a special writing on the side.  i got in the habit years ago of marking the date and sometimes, initials of who i enjoyed the wine with.  as i was putting this together, i was flooded with memories... there's even one from our wedding in the mix!

  2. with precision, cut out profile picture and then trace onto decorative paper.
  3. cut out and mount onto a heavyweight matte paper for framing.
easy as pie.
