hey hey! happy fri(yay) to you all! wanted to show you a few things i've been working on. i have a minor obsession with geometric everything right now. mix in a moon and i want to decorate my whole house!

these beauties will be printed on canvas and hung in the shop in just a few days. eek!

ranunculus.  one of my favorite flowers... they grow with a wild, spontaneous, twisty stem then bloom with what seems a hundred compact petals.  once fully open, the inside petals display a lighter shade, giving this flower even more depth than thought possible.

when my dinner table is blessed with them, i just have to photograph...

my new-found, favorite photo-editor is evan sharboneau. i can't wait to order his book and try everything in it!  above, i used the combo of just two simple photos.  it's the first photo style i found of his.  now i'm hooked.

i find that artist imitation is sometimes the best way to learn.  and just simple experimentation of course.  how do you expand your photography and editing talents?  classes?  books?  or like me... research, inspiration and imitation?

composite kick :: composite photography

i've been on a composite kick lately.  i think because the things i am photographing are so... well... blah.  it's the time of year.  i tend to look towards nature for my inspiration and when nature is windy, cold and rainy, i don't pack up the camera and go scene hunting much.

i do love a bleak and spooky photo though!  by adding a bit of texture and color, my 'blah' photographs can take on an interest that otherwise could be looked over.

i know many photographers that don't believe in adding layers of texture... or really, manipulating the photograph at all.  i get that.  i follow that rule most of the time actually... but i also think there is an art to seeing something beyond what you are given.

what about you?  do you prefer a photo in it's natural state?  or artistically touched up?

adventure :: composite photography

sometimes, i start editing a photograph and i really have no end in mind.  i just begin playing with the colors & adding textures.  it's funny though because the art i usually finish with has an idea buried within my sub conscience...

lately, i have been itching to travel.  and not on a road trip.  really travel far far away where a car, bus or train can not take me.  right now, however, in my life as a mother, wife & business owner, it's just not possible.

it's good to have things to look forward to though.  and it's always wonderful to day dream...

change :: composite photography

someone once said that 'change is the only constant in life'.  it certainly seems that way... so much so that i occasionally don't even notice our world changing around me until it stares me right in the eye.  until the old and new are side by side and i take a moment and repeat what my ancestors said... 'o my, how the world is changing fast'.

then something funny happens... i get nervous and anxious.  i ask questions that my husband can't answer and he gets frustrated with me.  and then he becomes anxious.

and then... we turn to our faith and relax slightly when we remind ourselves that there is someone very special who has a plan for all of us.  change... is apparently a constant within that plan... and we are just here to enjoy each phase of it.

photography compositions are amazing to me. it's basically drawing a picture for those who can't draw (me!).

mc escher is a classic inspiration. his drawings are surreal and intense... you can get lost in them. they aren't photographs however, but his work is a great example of combining seperate ideas into one piece. his ideas flow into one, which i think is the key to a good composite.

composition photography is used to create pop culture styles, eerie images, and simple things like a blue sky behind a house for sale.

here is what a simple search on flickr came up with. you can see the detail involved in some of these breathtaking pieces of art.

i have been using this technique for a long time now. in fact, it was actually my job during grad school: "image specialist". for work, i used this style to make products more appealing. now, for fun, i tend to combine images that usually end up eerie and inviting. here is my latest creation using a composite technique:
